  • My favorite comment on Xanga of the day:

The bottom line is that there is either God or not.  Theist.  Atheist.  Never the twain shall meet.  God is life, happiness, liberty, goodness, truth, justice, and virtue.  And atheism is not. So all the points on how Christians can tolerate atheist philosophy and vice versa are senseless.

Since atheism is the denial of God there can be no harmony with it from the Christian point of view.  Intellect and free will are what make man the image of the Creator.

And since atheism denies God it follows that it denies intellect and free will.  When a Christian converses with an atheist she must realize that she is dealing with a intellectually stunted slave.  For without intellectual integrity and freedom the human being is only capable of infantile babble.

It all makes sense now! Because God knows we never inherited rational and logical thought from non-Christians....

  • Finally got my password back so I can write my comment.

I have a guess I may already know your answer to this one, but I thought it appropriate to bring up now anyway considering the content of this post.  Since we're talking about where reason comes from.... Do you believe morality itself to be defined by God or that God merely backs these laws?  I think that the general consensus is actually that morality is independent of God.  I'm pretty sure C.S. Lewis mentioned that somewhere.... Anyway, just a random question since I've been bored lately.

  • @bangwhimper - depends on who you ask (and, of course, which religion you choose to follow). If God is, indeed, real, then it would technically be up to whatever God wants them to be.

Because we ought to ask ourselves - what is morality? A right and wrong. But what decides this?

If a truly omnipotent being can do as he pleases with our lives, then why not let him create the rules (considering we have little choice in the matter)? But what if there is no God? Then how would we decide?

There are then several theories for that scenario, some of which we've covered.

Due to my own stunted and limited sight and knowledge, I would argue that morality is that which keeps us progressing in life and that which doesn't harm yourself or others and doesn't limit others.

I say that because, for the most part, harm tends to be universally thought of as bad physically and emotionally. You might also argue that we have a disposition to not hurting others and, so, to want to do so is evil and against one's nature.

That being established, I would probably say, in my opinion, that God backs these laws.

I say this because (again in my opinion) without God the laws hold up. Insert God into this hypothetical situation and nothing is disrupted.

  • @bangwhimper - sorry to hear you're bored, btw. maybe we can do something in the upcoming days, given it is summer and we're both in town
